Ambient Sonification

Apr 28, 11

“Sonicity” by Stanza is a responsive sound art installation on on 170 speakers which aurally captures sensory elements of an environment.

This artwork focuses on the real time space and the experience of the gallery visitor as they interact with the space, using data gathered from these new technologies. My system monitors the space (the building) and the environment (the city) and captures live real time data (light , temperature, noise, humidity, position) to create an ambient sonification, an acoustic responsive environment, literally the sound of the micro incidents of change that occur over time.

Stanza is an internationally recognised artist, who has been exhibiting worldwide since 1984. Stanza is an expert in arts technology, CCTV, online networks, touch screens, environmental sensors, and interactive artworks. Recurring themes throughout his career include, the urban landscape, surveillance culture and alienation in the city.

Another sound-focused work by Stanza is the Soundcities online project, a database of recorded soundscapes from world cities made over the last twelve years. You can select a city and listen to it’s local noises, or you are free to upload your own field recording, making the project an impressive archive of international sound.
